As agents we must always stay on top of all the changes in our industry. We are the experts; we never want to make guesses or assumptions that can destroy our own credibility. Making a simple mistake regarding selecting the wrong enrollment period or SEP creates pending applications and even worse jeopardizes the enrollment of the prospect.
Because of the changes that took place in 2013, it has made even veteran agents second guess when to use IEP VS ICEP. To determine which one, follow these simple rules;
1. Use IEP when you are getting Part B for the first time and enrolling in a PDP or a MAPD. This also applies to Medicare Beneficiaries that became eligible prior to age 65 due to a disability, because at age 65 they get a second election.
2. Use ICEP if you are not electing drug coverage, (MA Only) or you delayed your Part B because you were working. Key: If Part A date is different that the Part B date it’s always ICEP.
Reminder, SEP is used for various other reasons, such as a new mover or losing Medicaid or Medi-Cal, etc…
Currently these are the rules, but we all know things are subject to change.
