As a Medicare sales specialist, it’s not unusual to be notified of a client that is in the hospital. It’s never something you want to hear, but it does provide an opportunity for you to show the client and their family that you care and are available to help. Educate them on their Medicare Advantage plan’s post-discharge meal delivery program is one great way to serve your Medicare Advantage clients that are either facing an inpatient hospital stay or were recently discharged from one.
How Post-Discharge Meal Delivery Programs Work
Although not required, most Medicare Advantage plans provide this benefit. It typically allows the member to receive 10 to 14 pre-cooked meals delivered to their home after being discharged from the hospital. Not having to worry about (or prepare) meals can be a big relief for a senior trying to rest and recover after a stay at the hospital.
Post-discharge meal delivery benefits will be explained in the Evidence of Coverage booklet of your client’s Medicare Advantage plan. It typically requires prior authorization.
